Meeting Place CEO reacts to Labour's planning system overhaul
The new Labour government has revealed proposed changes to the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), which is now out for consultation until 24 September 2024.
Commenting on the proposed changes, Meeting Place CEO Nikki Davies said: “Whilst the opportunity for the sector is significant, Labour’s plans to “meet the housing need in full” will require a comprehensive shift in mindset for communities across the UK, which will no doubt prove worrying for many.
“A clear commitment to – and tangible demonstration of – social impact will enhance community trust whilst ensuring developments reflect the genuine aspirations of local residents.
“Once this community need has been properly established, we must find and motivate the silent majority’s broad support for future development. The delivery of these homes will become far more palatable when that support has been demonstrated and local authorities have acknowledged the aspirations of the communities they serve.
“By prioritising social impact in this manner, the revised NPPF can help create more inclusive, empowered and cohesive communities whilst addressing many of the concerns held by those traditionally labelled as NIMBYs.
“The impact delivered must be authentic, in-depth and meaningful; designed to make engagement as easy and attractive as possible. It should happen regularly across the development process in the form of a constant feedback loop. Done properly, it will allow the sector to make the most of, and deliver on, this important legislative change.”
